Purse seining fishing

This fishing technique is also known as purse seining. Purse seining is used to catch pelagic fish species, such as herring and sprat, that are in the water column (at the water surface and not in or on the bottom) and swim in shoals.

Fishing technique

A surrounding fishing net is placed in the sea, which is pulled closed by pulling the lower tendon (bottom rope) of the seine. The net is then hauled aboard. The trapped fish become disoriented by the dust clouds caused by the seine ropes on the bottom.
